What started as a small family kitchen in the heart of Millcreek, Utah, quickly grew into a community gathering place where neighbors became regulars and regulars became family.
Our founder, Maria Santos, spent years perfecting recipes passed down through generations, blending traditional techniques with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Today, Cafe Rio is proud to serve thousands of guests each month — and every dish still carries that same homemade soul.

The Dream Begins
Maria Santos opens Cafe Rio in a cozy 800 sq ft space on Highland Drive with just 5 tables and a menu of 12 handcrafted dishes. Word spreads fast through the neighborhood.
First Expansion
Growing demand leads to our first renovation — tripling the dining area, adding a dedicated pastry kitchen, and launching our signature weekend brunch menu.
Award-Winning Recognition
Cafe Rio is named "Best Neighborhood Restaurant" by Utah Dining Magazine for three consecutive years. Our online ordering system launches, serving the broader Millcreek area.
Catering & Events Launch
We launch our full-service catering division, bringing Cafe Rio's flavors to weddings, corporate events, and community gatherings across the Salt Lake Valley.
Sustainability Pledge
Cafe Rio commits to 100% locally sourced produce, eliminates single-use plastics, and partners with three Utah farms for year-round fresh ingredient supply.
